Brian wrote an interesting post today called Doing Church. Since this post is very personal to me, I have to agree he put my feelings into words... I like the idea of having home churches. In a way, I've been having home church through Bible studies since I was in college. In a sense I have been a minister as long as I've been involved with these study groups. All the members minister to me, to each other. Maybe if one of us went through some formal training then we might see that person as more of an authority on the Bible, but I like how it's set up now; discussions are the authority.

Gus hasn't come back yet...

Comments:
About 7 years before my dad died he read a book about cell based churches. in the book the church gets together in one place to worship and fellowship (and possible teaching) but the real teaching/ministry was in the small cells, groups of 15-20 who meet together once a week. most churches do a version of this, but I have only been to one church that followed it completely, but I was in middleschool at the time and there were no kids my age there. childrens ministry is harder in such a church setting. (Cell based structure was one of the reasons we initally went to SPC)

Much of Wesley's early ministry was in small group settings. Yes, you're right, everyone there is a minster (as are all Christians, or at least we are all called to be ministers), that doesn't mean that it's a house church. It's a study group. It's a community. But it doesn't do all the functions of a Church.

Anyway, that's not really that important. I wish you luck with your new pastor. It usually takes a while for a new pastor to get their stride, but I hope it all works out soon for you.

Oh, I know this struggle. We asked our sons, 14, 12 and 10 a few months ago this question "If they wanted to raise kids who loved Jesus, what kind of church would they take them to?" We have attended an alternative church in Australia, and Anglican church, non-demoniational bible church,a nd after our move to back to the US were struggling to find a church, so we started home church in our home with our family. Their answer surprised me, all three of them said "Home church." So we have home church from 9:30 to 10:30 and then attend Quaker meeting from 11:00 to 12:00. Home church is where the teaching and learning and experiencing is done. Meeting is where we sit in the silence and experience the voice of the Spirit. Anyway, good luck to you and Brian on your journey.

Name:
Location: Beaverton, Oregon, United States

I was a French teacher for four years, a life-long dream achieved. Now, I'm taking a serious break to raise a family. I go to a United Methodist Church regularly with my husband, daughter and son. For my future ideal job, I'd love to travel the world eating in great restaurants and write food reviews!!! Someday I'd like to live on the Oregon Coast and be a translator for French tourists! However, in the meantime I'm earning a substantial income with Jewels by Park Lane, subbing & Shaklee!
